Powers of attorney
Someone you chose, ready to sign for you
A power of attorney names the person who can pay your bills and sign for you if you can’t. A health care power of attorney names who speaks with your doctors.
Without them a family may have to ask a judge to appoint a guardian or conservator, which takes months and costs far more than a flat-fee set of documents. We draft the set, walk you through the choices, and give you copies to hand to banks and hospitals.
The documents set includes
A financial power of attorney
A health care power of attorney
A living will
A HIPAA release so doctors can speak to your agent
Signing with witnesses and a notary
Copies for your bank, your doctor and your family

If you are the adult child
Most of our calls about these papers come from someone helping a parent.
Your parent can still sign
If they understand what the papers do, we can usually prepare them in one short visit, in the office or by video.
Your parent can’t sign any more
Then a court decides who acts. We explain the options and refer you to a guardianship lawyer, because that work is not a flat fee.
You are named as the agent
We can meet with you on your own to explain the duties and the limits before anything is signed.
About powers of attorney
How long does a power of attorney last?
Until you cancel it, or until your death. A financial one can start right away or only once a doctor says you can’t manage.
Will my bank accept it?
Most do. We draft the document in the form banks expect, and we give you a letter to take with it.
Who should I choose?
Someone steady, honest and nearby enough to act, with a second person named in case the first can’t. We talk through the choice with you.
